What Are the Different Types of Color-Changing LED Light Strips?

There are four different types of LED color-changing strip lights. These include RGB, RGBW, RGB+Tunable White, and Addressable RGB. The differences between each are listed below.

RGB

Red, green, and blue chips work together to create a range of colors. Does not create a pure white.

RGBW Strip LightRGBW Strip Light

RGBW

Works like RGB but also features chips that emit one shade of white (a cool, natural, or warm CCT), expanding the range of colors available. Has a fixed color temperature.

RGB+Tunable White

Offers the widest range of colors and temperatures. Has red, green, and blue chips, as well as tunable white chips. Tunable white LEDs can switch between multiple CCT options, including warm, natural, and cool. We carry one special strip option that also features an amber color.

Addressable Color Chasing LED Strip Lights Addressable Color Chasing LED Strip Lights

Addressable RGB

Features red, green, and blue LED chips, but differs from traditional color-changing strips in that addressable RGBs allow you to adjust portions of the strip to different colors simultaneously. These strips allow for customizable light displays, sequences, modes, speeds, and more. This elevated feature offers a range of unique effects, including an ombre look and alternating colors. These strips are also known as color-chasing.

How Do LED Lights Change Color?

These strip lights change color by using specific LED chips. Unlike single-color strips, where the chips are designed to remain set on a single color, the RGB chips switch between red, green, and blue color options. There are separate chips that will produce the white color for RGB+White or RGB+Tunable White strips. The RGB and white chips will alternate on the strip, with an RGB chip followed by a white chip, then an RGB chip, and so on.

However, the exemption for this is our COB RGB strip lights. Instead of containing multiple LED chips, these strips use chip-on-board (COB) technology, where the LEDs are directly printed onto the strip light. This creates a single, continuous line of color without any hot spots.

What Effects Can I Do With Color-Changing LED Strip Lights?

Depending on the type of strip you choose, our LED color-changing lights can remain static, rotate through a range of colors, coordinate with music, among many other modes. The controller and strip lights you choose will dictate which effects are available.

What Controller Do I Need?

You have various options when it comes to controllers. You can opt for a handheld (RF remote) or a channel receiver. If you want the flexibility to simply control your phone or tablet using an app, choose one of our smart, compatible controllers that operate with either Bluetooth or WiFi connections. Certain controls can also connect to smart home ecosystems such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

The controller you should use will also depend on the capabilities of the strip light. RGB controllers will control different functions than an RGB+Tunable White controller.

All color changing strip lights have the same types of controller options as mentioned above, the only difference is the capabilities of the strip lights. RGB controllers allow you to choose the specific color you would like. RGBW controllers allow you to control color-changing, single-color, and white modes on RGBW strip lights. RGBCCT controllers allow everything that RGBW controllers do in addition they offer the ability to adjust the color temperature.

What are the differences between color-chasing and color changing LED strips?

Color-Chasing LED Strips

Color-chasing LED light strips, also known as single addressable, have individually controllable LEDs on the strip and allow you to change different portions of the strip light at the same time giving you many unique effects such as an ombre look, alternating colors.

Color Changing LED Strips

Color changing strips only alternate to one single color at a time. You can change colors as you please, but the strips cannot produce different alternating effects like color-chasing strips.
