Why should I consider purchasing LED dusk-to-dawn flood lights?
Dusk-to-dawn flood lights are perfect for building perimeters and other areas that need lighting for safety and visibility on a smaller scale (compared to parking lots and other large vicinities). These are often referred to as “outdoor barn lights,” though their practical use extends far beyond that specific application. They are an excellent option for almost any type of outdoor security lighting.
How do dusk-to-dawn flood lights work?
Typically, dusk-to-dawn flood lights illuminate space from above and have a built-in photocell that automates the operation of the light. The photocell (or photo control) senses the amount of ambient light and turns the light on or off depending on the current conditions. This is superior to something like a timer as it needs no adjustment throughout the year and will even function during inclement weather without additional input.
What choices do I have for setting up my dusk-to-dawn flood lights?
Dusk-to-dawn flood lights can typically be mounted on a surface (like a wall) or attached to a pole or tenon. While they do include a built-in photocell, this can be bypassed for switched operation or to work with a larger network of lights operating in conjunction with a central photoelectric control system. Some lights also include options or versions that reduce uplighting with shades/glare shields.
How much control do I have over when they turn on and off?
Typically there will be the option of using the sensor or bypassing it by design. Bypassing the sensor allows for any other type of external control as needed.

Do dusk-to-dawn flood lights use any electricity during the day?
There is still a fractional amount of power required to operate the photocell sensor, but this is typically less than 1 W on most sensors.
Do all dusk-to-dawn flood lights include a photocell? What if I don’t need one?
Photocells are typically built-in/included as they greatly increase the efficiency of the lights and save energy without the need for any direct interaction or external control. These sensors can be bypassed so the light will function with normal external controls as needed in any case though. If you’re looking for a lower wattage area light solution, dusk-to-dawn flood lights are an excellent choice.

Can dusk-to-dawn light fixtures work with old wiring?
The wiring and connection is identical to any other existing flood light, so unless there is a need to change wiring based on damage or a need for relocation, no new wiring should be required. In cases where an old light was connected to a switch, that switch would need to remain on at all times in order for the dusk-to-dawn light to work properly though.
What certifications are useful for dusk-to-dawn flood lights?
As with any flood lights or outdoor security lighting, safety certifications from UL or ETL are a must to ensure reliability and code compliance. DLC certification is also a great thing to have for peace of mind and to potentially be eligible for utility rebates.
How should I choose dusk-to-dawn flood lights?
The first thing to do is make sure you know everything about local restrictions and codes in terms of light color/temperature (CCT) and allowable uplight and glare. Once that is determined, then simply find the light with the appropriate light output and the quantity you need for the job.
