When shopping for LEDs, you will notice they’re characterized not only by their lumens and wattage, but also by correlated color temperature (CCT). LEDs are available in various shades of white from classic warm white to cool (bluish) white that mimics natural daylight. The types of white emitted from a light can influence how a room looks and how colors are depicted.
What is CCT in Lighting?
Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) refers to the hue of white emitted from a bulb or fixture. CCT is measured in units of Kelvin on a scale of 1000K to 10,000K, with most standard lighting products being between 2500K and 6500K. Depending on where you’re shopping, color temperatures can have different names. For example, what Super Bright LEDs refers to as warm white, natural white, and cool white, other retailers might classify as soft white, bright white, and daylight. What matters is the Kelvin value. Regardless of what a store calls a certain Kelvin temperature or range, a 2700K bulb will appear the same from one store to another.


How to Choose the Right LED Lighting Product Color Temperature
Different CCTs serve different purposes, allowing you to select the best temperature to suit your application. A cool white (5000K and greater) emits an intense light with a blue hue. This color improves alertness, making it ideal for medical facilities, commercial spaces, and security lighting. Natural white (4000K-4500K) is similar to daylight and provides efficient lighting for classrooms, kitchens, and offices. Warm white (2700K-3500K) is a soft, yellow light great for encouraging relaxation in homes, hotels, and restaurants. Ultra warm white (2500K or less) features an orange light similar to candlelight and is often used for bedrooms or patios.
How Does Color Temperature Affect a Room?
Classic warm white bulbs won’t appear as bright as natural or cool white bulbs, often creating a relaxing atmosphere and reducing glare. Higher CCT values are generally beneficial in areas used to complete tasks requiring alertness or focus. When choosing CCT, also consider that it can affect the colors of furniture and walls. Lights with a warm CCT may add a yellow hue to white paint or make other colors look muted. Similarly, lights with a cool CCT will have a blue hue, which may enhance blues or greens.

How Can Color Temperature Affect Mood and Sleep?
CCT can affect your mood and your ability to sleep. To reduce the risks of negative effects on sleep, use a warm or ultra-warm CCT to increase relaxation and reduce eye strain. Since a cool CCT is often used to increase focus and productivity, it is not ideal to install in bedrooms.

Why Do LEDs Feel Harsh?
If your LEDs feel too harsh or intense, that may be an indicator you are using a CCT that is too cool for the space, and need to switch to a lower (warmer) Kelvin value or install dimmers (if applicable). On the other hand, this could indicate you are using a light with too many lumens, causing excessive brightness in the room.
Can I Use Multiple CCTs in the Same Room?
Certain rooms benefit from a tunable CCT bulb, allowing you to switch between CCT values. For example, a cool CCT would be beneficial in bathrooms when doing hair or makeup for the best visibility, but a warm CCT is better in the evening when showering and getting ready for bed. Similarly, classrooms may use a natural white when students are taking tests or completing assignments for focus, but could be changed to a warm CCT when eating lunch or relaxing towards the end of the day.
