Frequently Asked Vehicle Lighting Questions
Why upgrade to LED vehicle lights?
There are many benefits to upgrading your vehicle lights to LEDs, such as:
- Better Visibility: LEDs produce more powerful and focused light. They perform better in low-light or inclement weather.
- Enhanced Durability: LEDs are more resistant to shock, vibration, moisture, and extreme temperatures. Their solid-state construction makes them ideal for off-road, marine, and heavy-duty use.
- Lower Power Draw: LEDs use significantly less energy than halogen or incandescent vehicle bulbs. This can reduce strain on vehicle batteries and alternators.
- Longer Lifespan: LED vehicle lighting lasts over 25,000+ hours, meaning fewer replacements are needed over time. LEDs can last 5-10 times longer than halogen or incandescent vehicle lights.
Which is better, LED or halogen for cars?
LED bulbs are better than halogen bulbs for cars and other vehicles. The main reason is that LEDs provide more lumen output using much less power than halogen car bulbs, so they're much more efficient.
Additionally, LEDs produce more powerful light with a focused beam. This improves night vision and reduces eye strain. Their color temperature is closer to natural daylight than halogen, improving visibility and contrast.
Compared to halogen vehicle bulbs, LEDs are stronger and more shock-proof. Since they are solid-state devices, they do not have filaments or fragile parts inside that can break like halogens.
How do I know what LED car bulb to use?
To determine the right LED replacement car bulb, first check the size of the existing bulb in your car. You can do this by entering your vehicle’s make, model, and year into our Vehicle Bulb Finder. This will show you compatible bulbs with your vehicle and the light housing.
Or, if you know the bulb size of your vehicle already, you can use our Car Bulb Cross Reference Guide to find to correct LED bulb.
How do I Install LEDs on my car?
Installation is easy and straightforward for most LED vehicle lighting. Most bulbs are designed to be plug-and-play, matching the base and connector of the original bulb. In some cases, limited space can cause issues and affect fitment, especially with forward-facing lights and fog lights. To help you find the best fit, each product page includes detailed dimensional diagrams and photos to verify the LED bulb’s compatibility.
Is it illegal to have LED lights in your car?
It is legal to use LED bulbs in your car for the vast majority of applications in the USA. The only exception to this is when upgrading a halogen headlight housing with an LED bulb - this is not DOT compliant and only legal for off-road and powersport applications. This is true regardless of brand and marketing claims.
What is a CANbus error?
A CANbus error occurs when the system cannot detect an LED in the socket. The system checks whether a bulb is working by measuring its resistance. Since LEDs have less resistance, the CANbus system thinks the bulb is out and can throw up a "bulb out" error code on your vehicle dash. To mitigate issues like this you can purchase CANbus compatible bulbs, or install a load resistor.
Why is my LED turn signal blinking too fast?
If your LED turn signal is blinking too fast, or hyperflashing, compared to your previous incandescent bulb, It is due to the fact the LED bulbs draw such little power that your car’s turn signal relay thinks the bulb is out.
There are two ways you can fix the hyperflashing problem:
-
Install an LED flasher module- This is the easiest method. The flasher modules are small circular or square boxes with metal prongs sticking out on one side that easily plug into where your stock flasher was. Before ordering,
-
Install a load resistor kit- These are connected in parallel with the LED car bulb to mimic the electrical load of a traditional incandescent or halogen bulb, tricking the system into thinking the original bulb is still installed in the car.
*THIS IS A GUIDE for replacing vehicle bulbs. Sourced data can vary due to trim packages, manufacturer, and after-market modifications. To ensure compatibility please remove the bulb you wish to replace from your vehicle, then compare the socket and size to the bulbs listed on our site.
