The Department of Transportation (DOT) sets strict guidelines in respect to external vehicle lighting that must be followed in order for a light to be street legal. Vehicle fixtures—such as headlights and taillights—that have a DOT compliance mark are legal, safe, and considered to provide suitable illumination for street use when properly installed.

What are strobe lights, and what are they used for?

Vehicle strobe lights produce flashes of light in various patterns and speeds for increased awareness in emergency situations and rough weather conditions. They can also be used to signal an emergency warning. These lights are mainly used by emergency responders, volunteer responders, agricultural equipment, and tow trucks. It is important to note that strobe lights are not used to enhance visibility for the driver, but are instead used to let others see the vehicle that is using the light.

Are emergency strobe lights legal for personal vehicles?

Yes, it is legal in most areas to use strobe lights on your personal vehicle for off-roading needs and for use on private property. However, it might be against the law to use certain colors, such as red and blue strobes, that are typically reserved for emergency vehicles. Regulations regarding the use of strobe lights on non-emergency vehicles vary by county and state. Check with your local laws to see what color strobes are legal and if you can use them on public roads.

Where should you place a strobe light on a vehicle?

The placement of strobe lights on a vehicle depends on the purpose of the light. For emergency vehicles, strobe lights are often placed on the roof, grille, rear, and side mirrors. Make sure to consult your local regulations when determining where to install these lights as it may be against the law to install lights in certain areas, such as the vehicle undercarriage.

Can strobe lights be used on motorcycles?

Yes, with the right mounting hardware, strobe lights can be installed on motorcycles. This can make it easier to see motorcycles in low visibility. Ensure your strobe lights are compatible with your motorcycle, and check with local regulations for use on public roads before installing them.

What do different color strobe lights mean?

Different color emergency strobe lights signal different things. The use of certain colors also varies from state to state and within counties.

  • Red: Red flashing lights are commonly associated with emergencies and are used in police vehicles, fire trucks, and ambulances.
  • Blue: Blue strobe lights are primarily used by police and law enforcement.
  • Amber: Amber emergency lights are typically installed on tractor-trailers, construction vehicles, tow trucks, wreckers, public works, and escort vehicles. They can also be used for directing traffic.
  • White: White strobe lights are usually seen in combination with red or blue lights on police vehicles, ambulances, and fire trucks.
  • Green: Green flashing lights are primarily used by volunteer responders, the Department of Homeland Security, and private security.

How do you wire emergency strobe lights?

Installation for your strobe light will vary depending on the specific fixture and where you wish to install your light. You must also wire your light to a controller for easy On/Off control and if you wish to change between patterns. Most strobe lights use 3-wire or 5-wire pigtails to make this connection easy. Wiring can easily be done by connecting the pigtail wires to the switch wires with a wire nut. The exact wiring will depend on the number of pigtail wires and the switch you wish to use. Watch our video below for help wiring an LED strobe light to a switch.

Additionally, you must ensure your strobe lights are compatible with your car. Use the vehicle compatibility feature on our product pages to see which fixtures will work for your vehicle. Specific instructions on wiring should be followed according to the manufacturer's guidelines and the type of strobe light being installed.

Can you mount a strobe light to a plastic grille?

Yes, you can generally install LED strobe lights onto a plastic grille as long as the grille is sturdy and secure. For a heavy strobe, you may need bumper reinforcements.

Will an LED grille-mounted strobe light help with fog?

LED strobe lights can help cut through fog in adverse weather conditions. Lights with a longer wavelength (orange and yellow) will cut through the fog better than shorter wavelengths (blue) and allow other vehicles to see yours better. Keep in mind that while strobe lights are often used for warning or signaling purposes, fog lights are specifically designed to cut through fog and improve visibility. To increase your visibility in fog, consider upgrading your fog lights or low beams to LEDs.Yes, you can generally install LED strobe lights onto a plastic grille as long as the grille is sturdy and secure. For a heavy strobe, you may need bumper reinforcements.

How do I choose the right strobe pattern or mode for my needs?

The ideal strobe pattern will depend on your specific needs. For emergency or warning situations, choose a pattern that's highly visible and attention-grabbing. For directing traffic, you might require synchronous light heads that can signal the direction of the traffic. Remember, your strobe pattern does not need to be super fast, sometimes slower flash patterns can be just as effective. For 360-degree flashing, consider using hideaway strobe lights or strobe beacons.
