What Does it Mean when a LED Strip Light is “Weatherproof”? What is the Difference Between Weatherproof and Waterproof?
Weatherproof or outdoor LED strip lights typically have an IP rating of IP64 or higher. This means they are suitable for damp locations and contact with water but should not be submerged but can withstand splashes from all directions.
Waterproof LED strip lights are able to be submerged in water at a specified depth and for a set time amount. For waterproof and submersion, we would recommend IP68 or higher.
What IP Rating Do Weatherproof LED Strip Lights Start At?
Weatherproof LED strip lights with an IP rating of IP64 provide protection against condensation and water sprays, but can’t be submerged in water. IP67-rated LED lights are considered more waterproof and can be submerged for short periods of time.
You also need to be sure to use a connector that is at minimum, water resistant. This is to ensure your connections of strip lights and power supplies are secure and resilient to elements.
Also, for coastal areas with sea spray and contact with salt water, note that corrosion is more likely and securing cables with silicone coverings and sealed end caps is best.
Where Can I Use Weatherproof LED Light Strips?
Weatherproof LED Strips are suited for damp locations and exposure to elements. While they can withstand light contact with water, they should be placed in a location where they are mostly covered from exposure. Weatherproof light strips are great for anywhere that light contact with water may happen such as, covered porches, gazebos, under overhangs, and even in bathrooms and kitchens.
What Do I Need to Power the LED Strip Light?
For our LED strip lights, you will need to purchase a power supply. However, keep in mind that power supplies are not always weatherproof, so you will need to protect the power supply from the elements otherwise non-weatherproof or non-waterproof power supplies can fail.
What IP Rating are Weatherproof LED Light Strips?
For outdoor and damp locations with the possibility of water splashing, a minimum of IP65 is recommended. IP65 provides protection against dust and debris as well as water splashes and jets from any direction. However, IP65 LED light strips are not rated to be submerged in water.
Weatherproof lights are also used indoors for damp locations such as bathrooms and kitchen areas where steam and water splashes are possible. For these indoor locations, you could use an LED strip with an IP Rating of IP44. When placing lights under a gazebo or covered porch and railings, you can utilize LED strips with an IP rating of 65 or higher. For areas with direct contact with water and temporary submersion, IP67 LED strips would be used.
Can I Cut Weatherproof Outdoor LED Light Strips?
Yes, you can cut outdoor LED light strips to fit your needs. However, be sure to look for the designated cut lines and not cut outside of them. Ensure you have measured accurately and double-check before cutting.
When cutting strip lights to fit your application, be sure to use sharp scissors to get a clean cut and avoid fraying or uneven cuts. Be sure to disconnect your LED strip light from power before cutting. Once the strip is cut, to prevent damage from weather and outdoor elements, secure the areas cut with end caps.
How Long do Weatherproof Outdoor LED Strip Lights Last?
Most of our outdoor weatherproof LED Lights last up to 50,000 hours (this can be up to 17 years) with warranties for replacements if the strip light fails prior to this time or the warranty terms. As long as you don’t fully submerge our quality weatherproof LED strip lights, they should last you up to their rated life or the warranty period.
