Why Are My LED Headlights Flickering?

You may notice flickering after installing LEDs in your headlights. This is because LEDs require less power than incandescent bulbs to operate, so your vehicle may not initially register the bulb. Install a load resistor to solve this issue, by adding electrical resistance to the circuit, mimicking the amount created by an incandescent bulb. Load resistors can also be used to remove dash warnings. Shop our LED car flasher and load resistor category here.

What Color Automotive LED Bulb Should I Use for My Vehicle?

A cool white is typically preferred for vehicle headlights. This provides a modern look while also increasing visibility and safety. For fog lights, people tend to opt for a yellow or amber color because of their powerful performance in inclement weather. However, laws and regulations may vary between states and countries for vehicle lighting. Check with local authorities to ensure your LED lights are legal and compliant.

How Long Do LED Headlights Last?

LED headlights have a greater lifespan compared to traditional halogen headlights. On average, LED headlights can last from 15,000 to 50,000 hours or more, based on quality and use. The lifespan of LED headlights is affected by several factors, including bulb quality, frequency of use, and operating conditions. High-quality LED headlights used sparingly and operated under normal conditions can last up to 50,000 hours or more. In contrast, lower-quality bulbs or bulbs used frequently in extreme conditions may have a shorter lifespan. While designed for long life, LED headlights are not immune to failure. If you notice that your LED headlights are dimming or flickering, it may be a sign that the bulbs are starting to wear out and need replacing. It's vital to have your headlights checked and replaced when necessary to ensure proper visibility while driving at night or in low-light conditions.

How Do I Aim My Headlights Properly?

Having poorly aligned headlights can cause eyestrain for other drivers on the road and make it difficult for you to see the road or signs ahead of you. To adjust your headlights correctly, follow the steps listed below.

  • Park your vehicle 3 feet away from a wall. Ensure your vehicle is on a level surface with properly inflated tires.

  • Find the center of the vehicle and use painter’s tape to mark on the wall.

  • Then, measure the distance from the ground to the center of each headlight. Repeat this on the wall across from the headlights, subtract 2 inches, and mark with a horizontal piece of tape.

  • Back your vehicle up until it’s at least 25 feet away from the wall. The top of your beam pattern should sit along the bottom of your horizontal tape.

  • Adjust the headlights by finding the alignment adjuster, opening the hood, and finding the vertical and horizontal screws or bolts. Adjust until the intense part of the beam is just below the horizontal tape line.

  • To test your newly aligned headlights, perform a road test by driving your car at night.

If you're unsure how to do it yourself or suspect a problem with your headlights, it is a good idea to have them checked and aligned by a professional. For more detailed steps with images and a video, check out our ‘How to Adjust Your Headlights’ guide on our blog. You can also always check your vehicle's manual. The manual should have information on how to aim your headlights and any special instructions for your specific vehicle.

Can I Install Motorcycle Headlights Myself?

Yes, you can typically install LED motorcycle headlights on your own. The plug-and-play design of our motorcycle headlights makes this process fairly straightforward and simple. Our product pages also typically feature a 'User Manual,' which will include the necessary steps for installation.

Are LED Headlights Legal?

LED headlights are legal if installed by the manufacturer in the original equipment. LED headlight bulbs can also be legally used for off-road use in ATVs, UTVs, and off-road racing, and LED fog light applications are street-legal in the United States. However, LED bulbs cannot legally replace a halogen headlight bulb in your car, truck, motorcycle etc, regardless of marketing claims, in the United States.
