In-Ground Well Lights

In-grade or in-ground well lights are discrete landscape lights installed in the ground, concrete, or underwater to highlight various landscape and architectural features. Ground well lights are an integral part of any outdoor lighting system. These lights expand outdoor living space, boost curb appeal, and increase property value by illuminating vertical features like pillars, trees, and walls. You can install LED well lights on or near paths, walkways, and driveways for added safety and aesthetic appeal. Most outdoor LED well lights have an IP67 or higher rating. Some have an IP68 rating for submerged lighting, perfect for fountains, koi ponds, and other water features.

What are well-lights and how are they used?

Well-lights are discreet recessed light fixtures used for outdoor lighting. You can install well-lights in the ground, concrete, or underwater depending on the type of fixture and lighting application.

Use well-lights for uplighting to highlight various features such as trees, flag poles, gazebos, pillars, posts, and mailboxes. These lights are also suited for wall wash, path lighting, and lighting water features such as fountains and koi ponds in the case of waterproof well-lights.

How bright does my well-light need to be?

Depending on the application, your white LED well light should be between 200 and 800 lumens. Typically 400 lumens will be more than enough for landscape lighting. Use LED smart lighting to customize the brightness for a perfect fit.

Many LED smart lights offer wireless control for RGB + tunable white. These features allow for a striking lighting design that you can change to suit your needs for seasonal events.

Lumens measure light wavelengths of the visible spectrum. White light has multiple wavelengths, while single colors (RGB) are single-wavelength. RGB strips have a lower lumen reading but will appear as bright as a white version of the same strip.

Do LED landscape lights work well in cold weather?

Yes! LED landscape lights work well in cold weather and have improved operation at low temperatures, with an ambient operating temperature down to around -4° Fahrenheit. Studies have shown that operating in cold temperatures, LEDs have a higher output and increased longevity of the LED and driver. A type of solid-state lighting, LEDs require no warmup time and are less susceptible to damage from extreme shifts in temperature compared to fluorescent halogen bulbs.

Where should I place my well-lights?

Center well-lights with the objects to be illuminated and evenly spaced. Also known as recessed in-grade fixtures, well lights are installed in the ground flush with the grade so that only the cap or bezel sits above the surface. These guidelines are applicable when installed in concrete, soil, or mulch beds.

Why should I switch to LED well-lights?

There are many benefits to switching to LED well lights from halogen bulbs.

Longevity

Whether investing in new landscape lighting or replacing your existing lights, LED well lights offer excellent longevity compared to conventional bulbs. LEDs typically last tens of thousands of hours.

Cost

While the initial investment for LED well lights is slightly higher, the net benefit is significant. LEDs use approximately 85% less energy than an equivalent halogen bulb, saving you money on bulb replacement and energy costs.

Design Flexibility

With options for LED-ready drop-in fixtures and smart bulbs, LED well lights give you a wide range of choices for lighting customization, from a different white CCT bulb to RGB+tunable white CCT with wireless control of brightness, saturation, and color.
