Explosion Proof Lighting

Lighting in hazardous locations must meet specific standards when utilized in hazardous environments. The National Electrical Code (NEC) defines hazardous locations as places where there's a risk of fire or explosion due to the presence of flammable gases, vapors from flammable liquids, combustible liquid-produced vapors (Class I), combustible dust (Class II), combustible fibers/flyings, or ignitable fibers/flyings (Class III). Metal combustible fibers/flyings fall under Class II, Division 1, Group E.

Classifications for Hazardous Locations of Explosion Proof Lighting

The NEC outlines two main classification systems for these hazardous areas: classes/divisions and zones/groups. There are a variety of classifications from different organizations, but the NEC is the most recognized organization in the country.

Classes, Divisions, and Groups of Explosion Proof Lights

This system, detailed in NEC Article 500, categorizes hazardous locations based on the type of hazardous materials present (Classes), the likelihood of hazardous concentrations being present (Divisions), and the specific materials involved (Groups). The classes are further subdivided as follows:

  • Class I, Division 1: Areas where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases or vapors can exist under normal conditions.
  • Class I, Division 2: Locations where ignitible concentrations are not likely to exist under normal conditions.
  • Class II, Division 1: Places with ignitible or combustible dust concentrations under normal conditions.
  • Class II, Division 2: Areas without ignitible combustible dust concentrations under normal conditions.
  • Class III, Division 1:  Facilities where mixtures of nonmetal combustible fibers/flyings are present under normal conditions or are being handled/manufactured.
  • Class III, Division 2: Sites without these mixtures under normal conditions or where these materials are stored/handled outside of manufacturing processes.

Zones and Gas Groups of Explosion Proof Lights

This alternative system, found in NEC Articles 505 and 506, divides locations with flammable gases, vapors, and combustible dust into zones based on the frequency and duration of the potentially hazardous atmosphere:

  •  Zones 0, 1, and 2: for gases and vapors, with Zone 0 having continuous or long-term exposure under normal conditions, Zone 1 likely having exposure under normal conditions, and Zone 2 unlikely having exposure under normal conditions.
  • Zones 20, 21, and 22: for dust and fibers, with similar distinctions based on the likelihood and duration of exposure to hazardous concentrations under normal operating conditions.

Temperature Classification (T-Classes)

Temperature classifications play a critical role in the design of explosion-proof (ATEX) equipment and are commonly known as T Classes.

  • T1 Class: 842°F
  • T2 Class: 572°F
  • T3 Class: 392°F
  • T4 Class: 275°F
  • T5 Class: 212°F
  • T6 Class: 185°F
  • Auto-Ignition and Temperature Classification: T Class refers to the auto-ignition temperature of hazardous substances, defined as the minimum temperature required for a substance to ignite independently without any external ignition source.
  • Defining Temperature Class: Within areas classified as hazardous, a Temperature Class is assigned to devices and equipment to indicate the maximum levels of thermal energy permitted in a specific zone or generated by particular equipment. This classification serves as a guide to ensure safety in environments with explosive materials.
  • Temperature classifications, also called T Classe: Range from T1 to T6. These classifications indicate the highest temperature of surfaces or exhaust gases that equipment can reach under standard conditions, usually at an ambient temperature of 40°C (104°F). For instance, a T1 classification permits equipment temperatures up to 450°C (842°F), whereas a T4 classification restricts the maximum equipment surface temperature to 135°C (275°F) at room temperature.

Groups of Explosion Proof Lights

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) enhances safety protocols for lighting installations in hazardous areas by categorizing seven groups according to the properties of the present substances.

  • Class I: classified from A to D, focusing on gases.
    • Group A: Acetylene
    • Group B: Hydrogen
    • Group C: Ethylene
    • Group D: Propane
  • Class II: groups are identified from E to G, concentrating on various dust types.
    • Group E: Metal Dusts
    • Group F: Carbonaceous Dusts
    • Group G: Non-Conductive Dusts (these include plastic, wood, grain, flour, etc.)

To mitigate the risk of explosion, all equipment, including light fixtures, in these locations must be certified for use in the specific class, division, group, zone, or gas group where it will be installed. This includes markings for intrinsically safe equipment, indicating it's designed to prevent sparking and doesn't store sufficient energy to ignite a hazardous atmosphere.

UL Classified

UL, previously known as Underwriters Laboratories, is a leading authority on safety standards within the United States. They establish standards and testing methods that facilitate the classification and certification of products and components. The certification process is conducted by UL and other certifying entities that adopt UL's standards, such as Electrical Testing Labs (ETL) and CSA. Products that are Certified by UL or UL Listed have successfully undergone and passed all necessary tests for their intended installation and use. Look for UL 844 to ensure the light meets certifications.

UL Certified

UL certification signifies that lighting products meet rigorous safety standards, ensuring they are safe from electrical, fire, and injury risks. This certification, maintained through continuous compliance and periodic inspections, is a trusted mark of quality for manufacturers and consumers. It assures manufacturers that their products are high quality and that their lighting choices aren’t likely to pose safety hazards.

UL Listed

The "UL Listed" mark signifies that various lighting products and accessories, whether components or entire units are designed for installation as is, without any alterations. This designation can apply to complete lighting fixtures or specific components such as ballast-compatible bulbs.

Conversely, the "UL Classified" mark is designated for products intended for retrofit applications. For instance, a bulb bearing this mark can be used to retrofit a UL-certified fixture. If installed properly, the fixture maintains its UL certification. Certain items, like tube lights, may have both "UL Listed" and "UL Classified" marks, indicating their versatility for multiple installation methods.
