How to Make a DIY Christmas Wreath With LED Strip Lights
When it comes to pre-lit Christmas wreaths, white, multicolored, and fiber-optic color-changing are about the extent of available options. This year, you can make your house stand out with an LED DIY Christmas wreath. Using a Color-Chasing RGB LED Light Strip Kit with an included remote, your wreath can display 29 colors and 99 dynamic color-chasing and color-changing modes and patterns. The steps and video below demonstrate how to make a wreath so unique and full of color that everyone will have to stop and stare.
Materials Needed:
(1) Wreath
(1) Wreath Hook
(1) Color-Chasing RGB LED Light Strip Kit
(2) 1-Meter LC4 Extension Cables
(1) Waterproof Silicone Sealant
(1) 10-Millimeter Silicone End Cap
(1) Magnet and Hot Glue Gun OR Double-Sided Foam Tape
(1) AA or D Battery Pack Power Supply
OR
(1) Desktop Power Supply with Power Cord (included with light strip kit)
Note: You can use any weatherproof or waterproof LED strip light and matching connectors to illuminate your wreath for outdoor application.
1. Wrap the strip in a spiral form in and out of the foliage. If your wreath has a bow or ribbon, there’s no need to wrap behind it.
Because this is a color-chasing strip, you may want its chase patterns to begin at a certain location on the wreath. It is best to power on the strip before wrapping it around the wreath to ensure that it is wrapped how you want it.
2. When the strip comes to an end, it will most likely be longer than what’s needed. Cut the strip on one of its designated cut points (between gold contact points shown in photo below).
3. Apply silicone sealant to the end cap, and place the cap on the end of the strip to waterproof the joint.
4. At the bottom of the wreath, connect an LC4 extension cable to the strip. Wrap the connector around the wreath so that the end of the cable is at the top of the wreath.
5. Run double-sided tape along the back of the wreath hook to secure the wire from your other LC4 extension cable to hook. In this case, we needed to split the wires to run along both sides of the back of the hook.
6. Hang the hook on your door.
7A. If you’re using a battery pack:
- Using a hot glue gun, secure the controller around the battery pack, and plug its barrel connector into the output connector on the battery pack.
- Attach the LC4 connector on the back of the wreath hook to the controller’s LC4 connector.
- Using a magnet (secured with a hot glue gun), you can attach the battery pack to the back of the wreath hook. You can also use double-sided foam tape to secure it to your door or to the hook.
7B. If you’re using a desktop power supply:
- Attach the LC4 connector on the back of the wreath hook to the controller’s LC4 connector.
- Plug the power supply into the barrel connector on the controller.
- Using a magnet (secured with a hot glue gun), you can attach the power supply to the back of the wreath hook. You can also use double-sided foam tape to secure the power supply to your door or to the hook.
- Depending on where your wall outlet is, you might or might not need an extension cord to plug into the end of the power supply cord.
8. Attach the LC4 connector extension on top of the wreath to the LC4 connector at the bottom of the wreath hook, and hang the wreath.
Now your wreath is ready to be hung! It provides a great accent to front doors and complement to yard decor. Use it inside or, with outdoor rated LED strips, outside even in wet conditions.
